GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., August 7, 2019 – The National Roller Hockey League (NRHL) is excited to announce our fourth franchise with a press conference is scheduled for 12:00 pm this Friday, August 9, 2019 at the Delta Plex in Grand Rapids, Mich.. The press conference will introduce Grand Rapids, Mich. and surrounding communities to the National Roller Hockey League along with a new franchise. The NRHL will reveal the team name, logo, and other information for the Grand Rapids franchise as well as showcase the NRHL. There will be time for questions for press and fans at the conclusion of the press conference, which will be streamed live, then posted to our YouTube channel and other social media outlets.
Grand Rapids will become the NRHL’s fourth franchise, the Detroit Dragons, Port Huron Yeti, and St. Louis Vipers. NRHL Co-Founder & President Matt Wiedenhoeft noted, “We are excited to introduce the amazing city of Grand Rapids and all of West Michigan to the roller hockey community. I currently reside in West Michigan and know a franchise will thrive in Grand Rapids and surrounding communities.” Wiedenhoeft continued, “Grand Rapids was named the best minor league sports city a few years ago, and now the NRHL is bringing the city and region its first major professional roller hockey franchise. Grand Rapids and West Michigan are deserving of such an honor with its rich history of professional hockey”.
“Grand Rapids is the fastest growing city in Michigan,” stated NRHL Co-Founder and Commissioner Bob Clouston. “We knew this region needed a franchise and wanted the best opportunity for success. We feel we have it in Grand Rapids based on the facility, fans, and surrounding communities.”
Grand Rapids has been home to professional hockey for a long time, dating back to the 1950’s, when the Grand Rapids Rockets played in the EHL & IHL. The Grand Rapids Griffins, of the American Hockey League (AHL) and primary affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Detroit Red Wings, is the current, local professional ice hockey team.
“I remember coming to Port Huron to play the Beacons in the UHL when I played in the IHL/AHL for the Houston Aeros, Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and other teams” stated Rob Valicevic, the NRHL’s Vice President of Corporate Sales. He continued, “The community is going to be excited for the things we have planned for our games. The fans in Grand Rapids are amazing, know the sport and have such a passion for their team.”.
The NRHL has created a sign-up list for the Grand Rapids franchise for fans interested in tickets and team merchandise. Bob Hall, the NRHL Vice President of Business Development said, “We start with this list so we can get these fans first choice for season, group, and individual tickets. It’s currently available to all fans and as a bonus, those who have signed up to be on the list by Thursday morning will receive an invite to the press conference”.
